If you want to talk about East Asian history in the last decade, you simply cannot walk away from the 2019 Hong Kong protests. That movement was not just a change in management for the Chinese Communist Party. It was not just a new, shiny model of capitalism. For the average human being, the most visible side effect was a massive wave of migration. Professor Hung and I met in that wave, two pieces of driftwood bumping into each other, and we drifted off to different shores.
